Description
“Self-Portrait 2” — Vincent van Gogh, 1887
During his two years in Paris (1886–1888), Van Gogh painted more than twenty self-portraits — the cheapest model in Montmartre, and the most demanding. This 1887 self-portrait comes from the months when he was absorbing Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism: the palette brightens, the brushwork quickens, and the famous gaze fixes the viewer with unsettling calm.
The face is built in short, directional strokes, the background a shimmer of blue-green that makes the head feel lit from within. It is Van Gogh in his most experimental year — before Arles, before the sunflowers, but already unmistakably himself.
