Description

“Mäda Primavesi” — Gustav Klimt, 1912–1913

Nine-year-old Mäda Primavesi, daughter of Klimt’s patrons, stands hand on hip with the defiant self-possession of childhood. Behind her, the decorative fields of red and purple anticipate the final golden period of Vienna’s greatest portraitist.

Klimt’s portraits of children are among his rarest and most sought-after works — none more vivacious than Mäda, who stares out of the canvas with a will of her own. A jewel of Viennese Modernism and a delightful, characterful image for any interior.
