“Prochainement Tournée du Chat Noir” — Théophile Steinlen, 1896

One of the most iconic images of Belle Époque Paris, this poster by Théophile Steinlen announced the forthcoming tour of Le Chat Noir’s celebrated shadow theatre troupe. Steinlen, the legendary Montmartre artist and house illustrator of the Chat Noir cabaret, captured the club’s famous black cat silhouette with striking simplicity and graphic power.

Founded by Rodolphe Salis in 1881, Le Chat Noir was the beating heart of bohemian Paris — entertaining poets, painters and writers including Aristide Bruant and Erik Satie. Steinlen’s feline emblem became one of the most recognizable logos in poster history, and this 1896 design remains a beloved symbol of Parisian nightlife and artistic rebellion.
