“J. Edouard Pernot” — Leonetto Cappiello, 1900

This striking 1900 poster by Leonetto Cappiello advertised the aniseed liqueurs of J. Edouard Pernot, a distiller based in Pontarlier, France. Cappiello’s design shows his trademark wit and graphic daring, capturing the bold spirit of Belle Époque advertising when absinthe and aperitifs ruled French café culture.

Leonetto Cappiello transformed the art of the advertising poster, favouring vivid colours, playful figures and instant visual impact over the decorative detail of his predecessors. His early drinks posters, including this one, are prized by collectors for their charm and unmistakable style.
