Description
“Frontispiece, from Elles” — Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 1896 (Version 2)
Elles is the great lithographic series in which Toulouse-Lautrec recorded the private hours of the women of Paris’s maisons closes — painted, unusually for the age, with tenderness rather than titillation. The frontispiece, a woman seated alone at a table, quiet and self-possessed, sets the tone for the entire portfolio and remains one of his most softly observed images.
This version 2 offers a second impression of the 1896 frontispiece — the same celebrated composition prepared from a different state of the lithograph, for collectors who want both faces of the design on their wall. It belongs alongside his cabaret and theatre posters, but speaks in a lower, more intimate register.
