“Pièces Détachées et Cycles Brillant” — Raymond Tournon, 1900
In 1900 the whole world came to Paris for the Exposition Universelle, and every French manufacturer wanted a medal on its letterhead. Cycles Brillant had one to boast about — Médaille d’Argent, silver medal — and Raymond Tournon’s poster makes sure nobody misses it, in the confident, flowing style that made him one of the elegant workhorses of Belle Époque advertising.
The poster advertises spare parts as much as bicycles — “pièces détachées” — a reminder that the bicycle boom of the 1890s had created an entire industry of chains, cranks and hubs almost overnight. A superb print for cycling enthusiasts, workshop walls, and collectors of the great 1900 Exposition posters.
