“Cabaret du Chien Noir” — René Péan, 1896
The Cabaret du Chien Noir — the Black Dog Cabaret — was one of the legendary nightspots of fin-de-siècle Paris, and René Péan’s lithograph for it remains one of the most famous images of the age: the mischievous black dog against glowing colour, advertising an evening of singers, comedians and champagne.
Péan, a gifted pupil of the poster boom of the 1890s, gave Parisian nightlife its most beloved mascot. A historic and delightful piece of Montmartre’s golden age — perfect for anyone who loves Paris, cabaret, or a little elegant mischief.
