“Ambassadeurs: Aristide Bruant” — Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 1892

One of the most famous portraits in poster history: the cabaret singer Aristide Bruant, backstage at Les Ambassadeurs, captured by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec with his unmistakable silhouetted bravado — scarf, hat and cane radiating attitude. Bruant, the bawdy chansonnier of Montmartre, was one of Lautrec’s great muses.

Lautrec’s posters of Bruant defined the visual language of Belle Époque Paris and remain among the most collected images of the era — bold, graphic and full of the defiant spirit of the Montmartre nightlife he immortalised.
