Vintage Washing Powder Poster, Persil Marcello Dudovich, 1952

Marcello Dudovich (1878–1962) had by 1952 been producing exceptional commercial poster art for over five decades, his work spanning the Belle Époque, the Fascist period and the postwar reconstruction. That a leading detergent brand should commission him for a laundry poster speaks both to Dudovich’s enduring reputation and to the ambition of Persil’s advertising in Italy during the 1950s consumer boom.

Dudovich’s approach to the subject is characteristically elegant — his Persil poster elevates a domestic product into something graceful and assured, reflecting the optimism and growing prosperity of early 1950s Italian life.
