Description
Vintage Italian Olive Oil Poster by Erberto Carboni, “Lince”, 1953
This 1953 advertising poster for Bertolli olive oil was created by Erberto Carboni, working under his pseudonym “Lince” (Lynx), during a period when his modernist approach to graphic design was beginning to transform the visual language of Italian food advertising.
Erberto Carboni (1899-1984) trained as an architect before turning to graphic design, and brought to his advertising work a rigour and clarity that set new standards for Italian commercial art. His campaigns for Barilla in particular became legendary, but his work for Bertolli applied the same modernist sensibility — clean composition, confident colour, an absence of unnecessary decoration — to one of Italy’s most established food brands.
By 1953, Italy was on the cusp of its postwar “economic miracle,” and brands across the country were investing in a new visual identity that reflected modernity and quality. Carboni’s work for Bertolli is a fine example of this shift — a poster that feels both rooted in tradition and unmistakably forward-looking.
