Garda Circuit — Arduino Colato, 1930

This exhilarating 1930 motorsport poster by Arduino Colato was produced to promote the Garda Circuit — one of Italy’s early road races, held on the shores of Lake Garda in the years when Italian motor racing was at the forefront of the international scene.

Arduino Colato was an Italian graphic artist who worked in the dynamic tradition of Italian Futurist-influenced commercial art, applying speed, motion and energy to his sports and automotive imagery. His racing posters from the late 1920s and early 1930s capture the danger and glamour of an era when road racing on public circuits through Italian towns and lakesides was a major spectacle.

Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake and one of its most beautiful, provided a spectacular backdrop for motor racing in the interwar years. The circuit drew competitors and spectators from across Europe, and posters like this one — with their bold typography and sense of kinetic energy — were essential tools in building the mythology of Italian motorsport.
