Created in 1950 for French national tourism, this poster by Jean Picart Le Doux celebrates the Loire Valley — the “Pays des Châteaux” — with the stylised boldness that made him one of the most distinctive French graphic artists of the postwar era.

Jean Picart Le Doux (1902–1982) was a multidisciplinary French artist best known for his tapestry designs and his celebrated poster work for the SNCF, Air France and the Syndicat d’Initiative. His aesthetic drew on the traditions of medieval tapestry weaving — flat planes of colour, strong outlines, an almost heraldic sense of pattern — combined with a modernist clarity that gave his work an instantly recognisable quality.

The Loire Valley, with its extraordinary concentration of Renaissance and medieval châteaux — Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise, Azay-le-Rideau among them — had long been promoted as the jewel of French cultural tourism. Picart Le Doux’s poster distils that heritage into a single image of arresting beauty, entirely fitting for an artist who spent much of his career exploring the relationship between French medieval art and contemporary design.
