Two Turin Institutions in One Image

Turin’s great vermouth house and Fiat share more than a city. Both were born of Turinese ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit — the vermouth tradition dating to 1786, when Antonio Benedetto first produced his aromatic fortified wine near the Palazzo Reale; Fiat in 1899, when a group of investors gathered to found the company that would put Italy on wheels. Testa’s genius was to see the poetry in their juxtaposition: the first Fiat, emblem of Italy’s modern future, celebrated with a glass of classic Turin vermouth, symbol of its distinguished past. It is an image full of wit and warmth that captures a specific moment in Italian history with rare precision.
