Seed Oil Poster — Bertolli (Erberto Carboni, known as “Lince”), 1955-62

This bold, modernist advertising poster for Bertolli seed oil was created sometime between 1955 and 1962 by Erberto Carboni, working under his pseudonym “Lince” (Lynx). It represents a striking departure from earlier decorative advertising styles, embracing the clean, confident visual language that defined the best of Italian postwar graphic design.

Erberto Carboni (1899-1984) was one of the most influential figures in Italian graphic design of the 20th century. Trained as an architect, he brought a rigorous sense of structure and composition to his advertising work, most famously for Barilla, where his campaigns helped define the visual identity of Italian food branding for decades. His work for Bertolli applied that same modernist sensibility to the world of cooking oils — simple, striking, instantly memorable.

By the mid-1950s, Italy’s economic recovery (the “Italian economic miracle”) was driving a wave of new consumer products into Italian kitchens, and brands like Bertolli were at the forefront of a more confident, design-led approach to advertising — exactly the territory in which Carboni excelled.
