Description
“Parfumerie-Distillerie Monaco Iris Villa. Monte Carlo” — Jules Chéret, 1897
Before the casino had quite finished making Monte Carlo famous, the perfume of the place was being sold in bottles. This 1897 poster by Jules Chéret — the printer’s son who taught Paris to love colour — advertises the Parfumerie-Distillerie of the Iris Villa, and does it with all the azure and gilt swagger of the Belle Époque Riviera.
The iris was the signature note of the house, and Chéret gives it full star billing: his trademark rosy, animated woman floats against the Mediterranean light, selling scent the way he sold everything — as pure joy. A wonderful poster for perfume lovers, collectors of Chéret, and anyone decorating a vanity or dressing room.
