Museum of Natural History, South Kensington — Electric Railway House, 1923

This 1923 poster was produced by Electric Railway House — the publicity arm of London’s Underground Electric Railways Company — to encourage Londoners and visitors to take the Tube to South Kensington and visit the Natural History Museum, one of the capital’s most magnificent Victorian institutions.

The 1920s were a golden age of London Underground poster art. Under the visionary direction of Frank Pick, the Underground commissioned leading artists and designers to create posters that elevated everyday travel advertising into genuine works of art — encouraging Londoners to explore their own city by Tube, whether for museums, parks, theatres or shopping. These posters are now celebrated as some of the finest examples of British graphic design of the 20th century.

The Natural History Museum itself, opened in 1881 in its extraordinary Romanesque-style building, had by the 1920s become one of London’s great cultural landmarks — a treasure house of dinosaur skeletons, minerals and natural wonders that captivated visitors of every age. This poster captures the spirit of that era, when a trip on the Underground to South Kensington was an invitation to adventure and discovery.
