Mother’s Kiss — Mary Cassatt, 1891

Mary Cassatt (1844–1926) was the only American artist to exhibit with the French Impressionists — a distinction that speaks both to her exceptional talent and her remarkable determination in an era when women artists faced formidable barriers. Born in Pennsylvania, she spent most of her adult life in France, becoming a close friend and collaborator of Edgar Degas, whose influence can be felt in her compositional daring and her fascination with everyday life.

But where Degas often observed from a distance, Cassatt drew close. Her great subject was the intimate world of women and children — tender, attentive, completely unsentimental. Mother’s Kiss, created in 1891, is a fine example of her mature style: the gentle press of a mother’s lips to a child’s cheek, rendered with the warmth and delicacy that made Cassatt’s work immediately beloved on both sides of the Atlantic.

This period also saw Cassatt experimenting with Japanese woodblock printing techniques, which influenced the flatness and decorative quality visible in her colour prints and pastels. The result is a body of work that feels simultaneously of its moment and entirely timeless — domestic scenes elevated to something quietly transcendent.
