Leonetto Cappiello Exhibition Poster, 1960

This 1960 exhibition poster was produced to celebrate the work of Leonetto Cappiello — created after his death in 1942, as recognition of his towering contribution to the history of poster art grew in the postwar years.

Leonetto Cappiello (1875–1942) was born in Livorno, Italy, but made his career in Paris, where he became the most celebrated and prolific poster artist of the early 20th century. Often called the “father of modern advertising,” he transformed commercial poster design by abandoning the detailed, decorative style of the Belle Époque in favour of a single bold, often fantastical figure — leaping, dancing, or gesturing — against a plain dark background. This approach gave his work an immediacy and memorability that was entirely new.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Cappiello created thousands of posters for brands including Campari, Cinzano, Bouillon Kub, Thermogène and Klaus chocolate. By the time of this 1960 retrospective, he was being recognised as a pivotal figure in the history of graphic art — a reputation that has only grown since.
