When Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème received its world premiere in Turin on 1st February 1896, few could have predicted it would become one of the most beloved operas ever written. Conducted by a young Arturo Toscanini, the production was initially met with a mixed critical reception — but audiences adored it, and within months it was playing to rapturous houses across Italy and beyond.

Adolf Hohenstein (1854–1928) was the leading poster artist for Casa Ricordi, Puccini’s publisher, and the man responsible for the iconic visual identity of the composer’s greatest works. Hohenstein created the original 1896 La Bohème poster, and this design — whether the original or the 1906 reprint — bears his unmistakable hand: richly romantic imagery steeped in the world of the Paris garret, the struggling artists, and the tragic love of Rodolfo and Mimì.

Hohenstein’s poster art sits at the intersection of Liberty style (Italian Art Nouveau) and operatic Romanticism — lushly decorative, emotionally direct, and technically masterful. His Puccini posters are among the most collectible examples of Italian graphic art from the Belle Époque, and La Bohème remains the jewel in that crown.
