Painted during his first stay in Tahiti, Paul Gauguin’s “Ia Orana Maria” reimagines the Madonna and Child as a Tahitian mother and child, greeted by two winged figures in a lush, sacred landscape. The title is the Tahitian rendering of “Hail Mary”.

One of Gauguin’s first great Tahitian masterpieces, the work fuses Christian iconography with Polynesian beauty in the bold, flat colour and sinuous forms that defined his mature style. It remains one of the most moving encounters between European art and the South Seas.
