Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle — Pierre Commarmond, c.1928–38

This handsome travel poster by Pierre Commarmond promotes Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle — one of the most dramatic and best-preserved medieval fortresses in France, perched high in the Vosges Mountains of Alsace. Produced sometime between 1928 and 1938, it belongs to Commarmond’s most productive period working for the French national railways and tourism bodies.

Pierre Commarmond (1897–1982) was among the finest French poster artists of the interwar era, renowned for his work for the PLM and SNCF railways and for major exhibitions including the Foire de Paris. His style — clean Art Deco geometry, confident typography, a disciplined palette — made his travel posters among the most elegant of the period.

Haut-Koenigsbourg has a remarkable history. Originally built in the 12th century, destroyed by Swedish forces during the Thirty Years’ War, and left in ruins for two centuries, it was given by the town of Sélestat to Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1899. He commissioned its meticulous reconstruction, completing it in 1908. After the First World War returned Alsace to France, the castle became a French national monument and a major tourist attraction — making it a natural subject for railway and tourism poster art throughout the interwar years.
