France — Part of the Apocalypse Tapestry, 1956

This striking 1956 poster reproduces a section of the Apocalypse Tapestry of Angers — the largest surviving medieval tapestry in the world and one of France’s greatest cultural treasures. Commissioned around 1375 by Louis I, Duke of Anjou, and woven in Paris by Nicolas Bataille from cartoons by painter Hennequin de Bruges, the tapestry depicts scenes from the Book of Revelation across a series of enormous panels.

The tapestry narrowly survived the French Revolution — it was used for a time as a horse blanket — before being restored and permanently housed in the Château d’Angers, where it remains today. By the mid-20th century it had become a symbol of France’s medieval artistic heritage, and was frequently used in tourism and cultural promotional materials.

This poster, produced in 1956, uses the vivid reds and blues of the tapestry to powerful effect — a piece that bridges medieval art and mid-century graphic design. It works beautifully in spaces that appreciate both history and bold visual character.
