Ercolano ENIT Travel Poster — Marcello Dudovich, 1934

This elegant travel poster by Marcello Dudovich was commissioned in 1934 for ENIT, drawing visitors to Ercolano (Herculaneum) — the ancient Roman city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD and rediscovered in the 18th century. By the 1930s it had become one of southern Italy’s most compelling archaeological destinations.

Marcello Dudovich (1878–1962) is widely regarded as one of the greatest Italian poster artists of the 20th century. Born in Trieste, he produced work for Mele department stores, Rinascente and numerous ENIT campaigns, bringing a sophistication and quiet elegance to Italian commercial art that set him apart from his contemporaries. His travel posters for ENIT in the 1930s are particularly sought after by collectors.

This poster captures the romance of Italy’s ancient past — evoking the columns, mosaics and frescoed walls that still stand in Herculaneum, remarkably preserved beneath volcanic ash for nearly two millennia.
