This striking mid-century travel poster was created in 1955 by Mario Puppo for ENIT (Ente Nazionale Italiano per il Turismo), Italy’s national tourist board. It promotes three neighbouring Tuscan coastal resorts — Viareggio, Lido di Camaiore and Pietrasanta — that together formed one of Italy’s most fashionable summer destinations in the postwar years.

Mario Puppo (1905–1985) was a Genoese painter and graphic artist who produced a significant body of travel and tourism poster work during the 1940s and 1950s. His style balanced bold modernist composition with the sun-drenched warmth expected of Italian Riviera imagery, making his ENIT commissions among the most evocative of the era.

Viareggio had been a glamorous resort since the Belle Époque, renowned for its Liberty-style architecture and its celebrated carnival. By the 1950s the wider stretch of coast — taking in the quieter sands of Lido di Camaiore and the marble-quarrying town of Pietrasanta — was firmly on the itinerary of Italian and European holidaymakers alike.
