The Bianchi name needs little introduction to lovers of cycling history. Since its founding in Milan in 1885, the company has been woven into the fabric of Italian cycling culture — its machines ridden by champions, its posters adorning the walls of cycle shops and sports clubs across Europe.

Michel Libeaux was a French commercial illustrator who worked in the tradition of the great Belle Époque and early Art Deco poster artists. His contribution to the Bianchi advertising canon is distinctive — where some cycling posters of the era emphasise the mechanical or the heroic, Libeaux brings a certain French graphic elegance to the subject, a fluency of line and a mastery of decorative composition that reflects his training and sensibility.

The international reach of Bianchi’s advertising is itself a story worth telling. By the early decades of the 20th century, Italian bicycle manufacturers were marketing their products across Europe, commissioning artists from France and beyond to reach customers in different markets. A French artist producing a poster for an Italian cycle brand is a small but telling reminder of how cosmopolitan the world of commercial art already was in this period.
