Description

Vintage Drinks Poster, Carpano e la Prima Fiat – Armando Testa (1954)

Turin in 1954 was a city at the centre of Italy’s extraordinary post-war renewal. The Fiat factories were running at full capacity, the streets were filling with new cars, and the cafés were alive with the optimism of a nation rebuilding itself from the ground up. It is in this context that Armando Testa created one of the most charming and culturally resonant posters in the entire Carpano series — an image that brings together two of Turin’s greatest gifts to the world: its vermouth and its automobiles.

Two Turin Institutions in One Image

Carpano and Fiat share more than a city. Both were born of Turinese ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit — Carpano in 1786, when Antonio Benedetto Carpano invented vermouth in a small shop near the Palazzo Reale; Fiat in 1899, when a group of investors gathered to found the company that would put Italy on wheels. Testa’s genius was to see the poetry in their juxtaposition: the first Fiat, emblem of Italy’s modern future, celebrated with a glass of Carpano, symbol of its distinguished past. It is an image full of wit and warmth that captures a specific moment in Italian history with rare precision.

Armando Testa — Designer of Modern Italy

Armando Testa (1917–1992) was as much a chronicler of Italian culture as he was a designer. His posters captured the moods, ambitions, and pleasures of mid-century Italy with a lightness of touch and a depth of understanding that set him apart from every other commercial artist of his generation. The Carpano prima Fiat poster is one of the most personal and historically specific of all his works — a love letter to the city that made him.
