Description

Cin Cin Cinzano – Vintage Italian Vermouth Advertising Poster (1951–1960)

Cin cin — the Italian toast, cheerful and convivial, the sound of glasses meeting across a table — could not have a more fitting brand attached to it than Cinzano, the Turin vermouth house whose name has been synonymous with Italian aperitivo culture for more than two centuries. This vivid poster, created between 1951 and 1960 at the height of Italy’s post-war economic miracle, captures that spirit of celebration and sociability with all the graphic confidence of the era.

Cinzano — Turin’s Great Vermouth House

The House of Cinzano was founded in Turin in 1757 by the brothers Giovanni and Carlo Stefano Cinzano, making it one of the oldest vermouth producers in the world. Like its great rival Carpano — also Turin-born — Cinzano grew from the city’s rich tradition of aromatic wine production into an international brand of the first order, its red and white vermouths and sparkling wines becoming fixtures at aperitivo hours from Milan to Buenos Aires. By the 1950s, Cinzano’s advertising was among the most celebrated in Italy, commissioning some of the finest graphic artists of the day to communicate its message of conviviality and pleasure.

The Art of the Aperitivo

The Italian aperitivo hour — that suspended moment between the working day and the evening, a glass of something cold and aromatic, good company, the day’s business set aside — is one of the great institutions of Italian life, and Cinzano has always been at its centre. This poster from the 1950s captures that moment with the warmth and wit that Italian drinks advertising of the period did better than almost anyone else in the world.
