Champagne Saint-Marceaux – Occhipinti (c.1910–1920) | Vintage French Champagne Advertising Poster

Against a sweep of luminous green that fills the composition with the freshness of a summer garden, a woman in the fashions of the early 1910s raises a glass of champagne with an expression of serene pleasure. This is Champagne Saint-Marceaux de Reims — one of the great champagne houses of the Belle Époque — and Occhipinti has given it a poster of genuine elegance and allure. The large hat, the graceful pose, the glass catching the light: it is an image of feminine pleasure and social ease that captures the very spirit of the era.

Occhipinti and the Belle Époque Poster Tradition

Created between 1910 and 1920, this poster sits at the crossroads of the Belle Époque and the early Art Deco period — a moment when the decorative arts were still rooted in the flowing lines and rich colour of the earlier tradition but beginning to reach towards the bolder, more geometric language of what was to come. Occhipinti’s design captures this transition perfectly: the figure is rendered with the detailed elegance of the Belle Époque illustrator, while the bold green background anticipates the flat colour fields of the Art Deco poster masters.

Champagne Saint-Marceaux — Reims at Its Finest

The House of Saint-Marceaux was one of Reims’s most distinguished champagne producers, their wines a fixture at the great tables of Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. To commission a poster of this quality was entirely in keeping with their positioning — champagne as the drink of elegance, pleasure, and civilised life at its most refined. The poster is as much an advertisement for a way of living as for a particular wine.
