Description
“The Original Charleston” — Roger de Valerio, 1926
Few dance crazes swept the world as fast as the Charleston. Bursting out of the African-American Broadway show Runnin’ Wild in 1923, by 1926 it was the sound of the age — and Roger de Valerio’s poster catches it mid-flight: limbs flung wide, rhythms bent syncopated, everything moving at once.
De Valerio was one of the great French commercial draughtsmen of his generation, and this is his most joyous work — a poster that dances. For lovers of jazz age, Art Deco and the 1920s, it brings the whole roaring decade to a wall.
