“Jockey” — Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 1899
In the final years of his short life, Toulouse-Lautrec turned from the cabarets of Montmartre to the racecourses he had loved since boyhood. His Jockey of 1899 is a thunderous image: horse and rider flung full-tilt at the picture plane, the movement blur and dramatic cropping influenced by the new medium of photography and by Japanese prints.
It is one of the great sporting images of the nineteenth century — painted with all the energy and nervous line of an artist who knew he was running his own final furlong. A magnificent piece for horse-racing enthusiasts and lovers of Lautrec alike.
