Description
“Self-Portrait” — Edgar Degas, 1857
Aged just twenty-two, Degas painted himself with the searching, unflinching eye that would define his career: intense gaze, dark palette, and the proud bearing of a young man who had taught himself by copying in the Louvre. It is one of the most penetrating self-portraits of the nineteenth century.
This early work already contains the Degas to come — the psychological sharpness, the exactness of observation, the refusal to flatter. A fascinating piece for anyone drawn to the man behind the dancers and racehorses.
