Edgar Degas’ racecourse scenes are among his most admired works, and “Jockey” distils everything that made them great: the taut energy of horse and rider, cropped compositions borrowed from photography, and an unerring eye for the aristocratic world of Longchamp and the Bois de Boulogne.

Degas returned to racing subjects throughout his career, fascinated by the movement of horses — a subject he studied with almost scientific precision. This beautiful image brings the colour and pageantry of nineteenth-century French racing into the modern home.
