This striking 1941 poster by Giuseppe Amisani celebrates the Autostrada and the magnificent Castello Sforzesco of Milan — one of the great Renaissance fortresses of northern Italy and a defining landmark of the city. The combination of modern road infrastructure and historic architecture speaks to the particular aesthetic of Italian institutional art of the early 1940s, in which modernity and heritage were presented as complementary expressions of national identity.

Giuseppe Amisani (1881–1941) was a distinguished Italian painter, celebrated above all as a portrait artist whose subjects included royalty, aristocracy and leading figures of Italian cultural and political life. His work in the commercial and institutional poster sphere is less well known but no less accomplished — this poster, produced in the final year of his life, demonstrates the same confidence of composition and sensitivity to atmosphere that characterised his finest painted work.

The Castello Sforzesco, originally built in the 14th century and reconstructed by Francesco Sforza in the 15th, is one of Milan’s most beloved monuments — its towers and courtyards housing some of the city’s greatest art collections, including Michelangelo’s final sculpture, the Pietà Rondanini.
