Description

Vichy Golf – Bernard Villemot (1950–1955) | Vintage French Travel Poster

Between 1950 and 1955, Bernard Villemot — one of the greatest French poster artists of the twentieth century — created this elegant travel poster for Vichy, the celebrated spa town of the Auvergne whose thermal springs and sporting facilities had been drawing fashionable visitors since the nineteenth century. The golf motif is perfectly chosen: by the early 1950s, Vichy’s golf course was one of the finest in France, and the combination of thermal cure and sporting leisure made the town one of the most complete resort destinations in Europe.

Bernard Villemot — A Master of the French Poster

Bernard Villemot (1911–1989) was one of the defining figures of French graphic design in the post-war period, his posters for Bally shoes, Orangina, Air France, and dozens of other clients celebrated for their combination of graphic simplicity, colour mastery, and human warmth. His style — bold, clean, and suffused with an understanding of how to make an image immediately appealing — was perfectly suited to travel advertising, where the challenge is always to make the viewer want to be somewhere else. The Vichy Golf poster is a fine example of his mature work: confident, elegant, and entirely memorable.

Vichy — France’s Premier Spa Town

Vichy’s thermal springs had been celebrated since Roman times, and the town’s development as a fashionable resort accelerated dramatically in the nineteenth century when Napoleon III made it his regular summer residence. By the 1950s, Vichy offered its visitors a remarkable combination of therapeutic waters, elegant architecture, fine restaurants, and first-class sporting facilities — including the golf course that Villemot’s poster so memorably celebrates. It was, in short, one of the great destinations of post-war French leisure culture.
